HEALTHCARE
RECORDKEEPING APP

Research & Prototype for Healthcare for the Forgotten People App for a Hackathon

THE PROBLEM

Caregivers need a way to easily manage and access records because they can feel overwhelmed when trying to care for multiple people at once.

Patients have a hard time trusting doctors and the healthcare system, which is difficult to navigate in general.

Recordkeeping is a part of this frustration-- and they wished there was an app that acted as a medical journal that allowed users to keep track of their own health plus the health of their loved ones.

Note: This was a collaborative project. The team regularly met for meetings and participated during every phase of the project. In the Process page, I highlighted some areas where I took a leading role.

HIGH LEVEL TIMELINE

This project took 15 weeks from start to finish with 6 core team members and 1 person who helped with research during the beginning of the project.

MAKE OF THE TEAM

Six core team members were responsible for problem definition, research, product design and user testing. The seventh team member helped with research.

KEY GOAL

The goal was to make healthcare access equitable across all patients trying to access them.

MY ROLE

This was a 15-week collaborative project with a very tight project timeline.

All six participants were part of every project phase. Our seventh team member initially participated during the research phase before moving on.

UNDERSTANDING THE USER

Our hypothesis was that the minorities from the BIPOC community are the forgotten people. We conducted
user interviews to understand the challenges such users face while trying to access healthcare services.

Based on the user interviews, we created three personas.

  • The caregiver is a busy professional but also cares for her aging parents.

  • The busy grandpa speaks little English and depends on his niece to communicate with the physician.

  • The newcomer to the city finds navigating the healthcare system overwhelming without her parents’ guidance.

Upon further exploration, we concluded that the caregivers had the highest number of pain points plus, these personas could also be responsible for the health and wellness of a newcomer or a busy grandpa.

So, we decided to focus on the user flow of the caregiver persona and decided to focus on solving for the record-keeping/medical journal pain point -- since our research indicated that there isn’t a comparable solution
in the market.

User Feedback

"I am being handed to different doctors and I didn’t feel like I was cared for"

BREAKING DOWN THE PROCESS

This Hexagon hackathon project took 15 weeks from start to finish with 6 core team members. It was a collaborative effort with all participants providing input during every step. This hackathon was structured around 4 major milestones--a kick-off event, user research, solution ideation, prototyping, usability testing, plus the final project showcase.

Research & Discovery

During this phase, we formed our team, generated a hypothesis, used some industry-standard tools to gain empathy and understand the problem space. Conducted research interviews of 10 users and analyzed the results.

Solution Ideation

Based on the interview results, we found out that our hypothesis was disproven. So, we pivoted during the ideation session, we formed 3 different personas explored their user flow. This helped us finalize our single persona and we named her Layla and we built Layla’s user flow diagram.

Prototyping

We decided to focus on the recordkeeping solution for caregivers. We conducted wireframing and rapid prototyping. This was followed by two iterations of mid-fidelity prototyping. We built 6 screens for this solution with the idea of this could be an app or an API.

User Testing, Analysis & Recommendation

Conducted user testing with 3 different testers who were pretty close to Layla’s persona. Overall, we received favorable feedback from our users for this product and they would like to see this as a real-life app or product. We will continue to iterate and improve this product.

THESE WERE THE GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF THE HEXAGON HOUSTON HACKATHON

Equity was the underlying theme for the 2021 Hexagon-Houston Hackathon.

The following ideas were the guiding principles during the course of

the hackathon.

Racism and inequity are products of design. They can be redesigned.

How can design thinking powerfully serve as a force for equity + address the effects of oppression?

LESSONS LEARNED

Our hypothesis was proven wrong; from our research, we concluded almost everyone could be forgotten. It almost appears like forgotten can be a state of the customer experience rather than an actual persona.

  • Won the ‘Community Choice Award. This competition was held between 6 teams out of which 4 teams completed the entire project.

  • Received a lot of positive feedback about our product idea, and thoroughness of research.

  • Will continue with product improvement.
